Evgeniy Shapovalov (b. 1986, Simferopol) is a graphic designer, painter and member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine. He was born into a family of artists and works in a wide range of genres including still life, landscape, nude, abstraction, and portraiture. His dynamic compositions are emotional and complex, usually combining photorealistic painting with abstract forms in an array of mixed media.

Sonya: A Sunflower Network Project presents Flower II (2021), a pre-invasion abstract work on canvas. The expansive blue background seems to be supporting these large soft forms as if they are flowers afloat. The softer texture and darker tone of the petal-like forms create the foundation of the work, while thin sporadic lines of oil pastel dance across the canvas. Underneath the purple and white petals, the differences in texture, density, and size of the darker blue shapes make it seem like the entire body is slowly sinking. Shapovalov’s work often works with texture in this way, playing with the viewer’s sense of perspective with large 3-dimensional blobs of acrylic paint mixed in with fine brush strokes and sweeping pastel marks.

Shapovalov is an active participant of regional and national exhibitions, projects, and plein airs. In 2017, he was the winner of the All Ukrainian Plein Air “Best Artist” in Vinnytsia. The artist remains in Ukraine.
